Avoid These 10 Design Disasters When Creating Your Business’ Marketing Materials

By Katrina Sawa Have you ever noticed how many articles there are on creating your own marketing materials? These articles concentrate on things you “should do,” offering such clever advice as “Know your audience,” “Say it with pictures” or “Write clearly and distinctly.” Now I’m not saying any of that is bad advice. But you should also know what not to do. That’s what this article is about. Or more specifically, it’s about what most do-it-yourselfers are tempted to do–but shouldn’t. Nothing screams “Design Novice” like the following 10 mistakes: 1. Don’t enlarge your logo so it’s the main focus of the page. Yes, your logo features the name of your company. But it’s not the main point. People are interested in what you’re selling, not who you are. In fact, the smaller your logo, the more established your company will appear. Besides, if they are interested in what youre selling or promoting, they will look to the bottom to find out where to get it. 2. Don’t place your logo in the text of your piece. Of course it’s fine to use the name of your company in the text of any of your marketing materials, but inserting your actual logo into a headline or body copy is design suicide. 3. Don’t use every font at your disposal. Choose one or two fonts for all your materials to build your brand. Your font choices should be consistent with your image and your industry. Cursive and creative fonts are often hard to read, know your audiences ability to read such things and they must still stand out. 4. Don’t use color indiscriminately. More color doesn’t necessarily make something more appealing. Often it just makes it loud and annoying. When someone screams at you, do you want to listen or run away? Most, if not all, your text should be the same color, preferably black for readability or red for a call to action. For a unique look, try duotone photographs or print in two colors. If you plan to use full color on a piece make sure you really utilize that color instead of just putting it in your logo for example and nowhere else thats just a waste of color and youre paying extra for that. On the flip side, try not to use too many colors in the text; Ive seen sometimes 5-7 colors in the text on just a business card and that makes nothing stand out plus its hard to follow. 5. Don’t be redundant. Don’t repeat the name of your industry or product in your company name and your tagline and your headline. Potential customers know your industry. Restating it implies you don’t. 6. Don’t choose low-quality or low-resolution photography. A photo may look great in an album, but unless it features balanced lighting and good composition, it’s not print-worthy. Photos need to be at least 300 dpi. And yes, people can tell the difference. 7. Don’t fill up every inch of white space on the page. White space, or negative space, brings focus to what’s important and gives the eye a rest. You may have a lot to say, but cramming it all in creates chaos and minimizes impact. Your piece will end up visually overwhelming. Think less, not more. Besides you should have a website now that people can go to for more detailed information. 8. Don’t focus on the details of your product or service; instead, focus on how it benefits your audience. Unless your product is extremely technical, make your offering relevant to your audience by emphasizing its benefits, not its features. Otherwise it’s like going to a party and talking about yourself all night. That’s not exactly the best way to win friends or gain customers. Your heading and your message must hit your target markets hot buttons and whats in it for them? 9. Don’t do exactly what your competitors are doing. When you’re positioning your product, it’s good to know your competition. But don’t copy them. Find out what your customers want and are attracted to. Stand out without sticking out. If you can take your logo and place it in your competitors ad and it applies and vice versa then youre not getting creative or unique enough with your message and you just look like everyone else. Besides, who knows if theyre getting good response on their ads? They might not be. 10. Don’t change design styles with every marketing piece you create. Strive for a consistent look and feel, keeping the same fonts and logo placement. If you use photos in one ad, don’t use illustrations in another. If you place your logo in the middle of one brochure, don’t place in at the top-right corner in another. You get the gist. Finally, do be clear, clean, compelling and consistent. You know it’s time to stop living a Life-In-Waiting, but maybe you’re not sure where to begin when it comes to dating and romance. There are a lot of options, like going out more, looking for online romance, or registering with dating services. But the real place to start might surprise you: begin with Big Beautiful You! I’m not talking about waiting to start dating until you’ve lost those pounds or until you’ve finally balanced your checkbook. That’d be like waiting to cook dinner until after you’ve purchased the perfect ice-maker. No, I’m talking about doing a week-long dating self-inventory. I’m talking about starting from the inside, knowing yourself as a single woman, and knowing what you really want out of a relationship. In short, I’m talking about opening yourself up to a life that embraces Mr. or Mrs. Right. And it all starts with a smile. 1. Yes, Smile. That’s your task for Monday. Smile all day long, at everyone you meet. Smile even if you don’t feel like it. Smile when you pick up the phone. Smile at the people in the checkout isle of the grocery store. Smile at the mail carrier. Smile at your cat. Smiling is a way of telling other people that you’re receptive to them, receptive to meeting others, and receptive to life. It also releases chemicals in your brain that tell you the same thing. Receptive people find it easier to get dates. 2. Keep Smiling, and Tell Everybody. Tuesday is “Tell Everybody” day. If you’re truly open to dating, you have to let everyone know. Call, email, send letters. Tell every friend you have that you’re ready to start dating, and ask them if they know anyone who might interest you. If they don’t, ask them to ask their friends. This is what we call a leap of faith. An attitude change isn’t real until we share it with someone else. Once you’ve gotten the word out, it will be harder to chicken out. 3. Make a List of Dates You’d Like To Go On. For Wednesday, get out a sheet of paper and write down five dates you’d like to go on in the next year. Maybe you’d like to go on a picnic. Maybe you’d like to go out to dinner at a particular restaurant. Perhaps taking a tour of the local zoo is more your cup of tea. Or perhaps tea is your cup of tea, and you know of a local tea house. Whatever you fancy, write it down. Envision yourself going there on a date. Now you’ve got a list ready if someone asks ‘What do you want to do?’ And don’t forget to keep smiling. 4. Pick out Outfits. Thursday evening, make a date with your closet. Go through your wardrobe and write down outfits that you’d wear to each of the potential dates you listed yesterday. If you’d like to go to the opera, and you don’t have a ball gown, don’t panic. The opera is one of those dates that everyone is expected to fret over. But otherwise, don’t allow clothing to be an excuse to avoid going out. Too many women turn down dates because they can’t imagine what they’d wear. And BBWs, with their additional difficulties shopping for clothing, are just as guilty of this as anyone. With a handy list of outfits ready, you won’t have that excuse. 5. Join a New Club. Fridays shouldn’t be spent alone, and single women need as many friends as they can get. Pick a new club that interests you. Perhaps you’re interested in politics–find a way to hook up with a local chapter of your party. Perhaps you’d like to be a better speaker; join the local toastmaster group. If your interests are primarily those that appeal to women, and you’re looking for a member of the opposite sex to sweep you off your feet, don’t worry. All those ladies at your new club likely have brothers and sons they can fix you up on dates with. Do what you love and the dating will come. 6. Make an Online Profile at Myspace or Friendster. Saturday you should have the time to sit down and make a profile on a social networking site. The benefits of doing this are two-fold. First, it will help you meet new people, often in your area. Second, it will force you to answer questions about yourself. By thinking hard about your own interests, your own strengths, and how you want to introduce yourself as a Big Beautiful Woman to the dating world, this will help prepare you for other opportunities down the road, such as dating services or classified ads. Invite a friend over and have her take lots of pictures of you so that you can put one up on your profile that flatters you. Digital cameras are great for this. Really think about who you are as a person and what you want for yourself, and from a partner. 7. Clean your Bedroom. Seriously. Clean your bedroom. Sunday is an opportunity for you to start your new week fresh with a romantic retreat in your own house that will make you feel sexy and energized. Knowing that you have a bedroom to take someone back to, if the mood should strike you, will help open you up to new possibilities, even if you think you’re not that kind of girl. Besides, your bedroom is likely where you’ll get ready to go on a date. It should be clean and organized so that you won’t be stressed when you’re getting ready. A clean bedroom will also give you a chance for peaceful reflection on the journey you’re about to embark upon. One week later, and you’re ready to start going on dates, registering with dating services, and finding romance. You’ve prepared yourself, in an out. You’re a Big Beautiful Woman ready to take on the world. So breathe in deep, smile, and jump back into the single’s scene. Cleaning, Storing and Displaying Antique Sterling Silver

By Grant Copland Whether your store your antique sterling silver or put it on display, you must first clean and give it a fine polish. For this you need a flannel cloth, a 100% cotton cloth, a special sterling silver cleaning cloth or a soft bristle brush, such as a horsehair brush or a baby’s toothbrush. Silver is a very soft metal and it can thus be easily scratched or pitted so it needs to be lightly rubbed or polished. Make sure that whatever cleaning implement you use is completely cleaned as left over dirt from previous cleanings can also cause pitting or abrasions on your antique sterling silver. You can merely use a small amount of laundry detergent mixed with one half cup of warm water as your cleaning agent for doing a light cleaning for things like dust, dirt, or fingerprints. Then get a soft polishing cloth and give your antique sterling silver piece a nice polish. After you have completely air dried your cleaning implement, store it in a zip lock bag. If there is a whole lot of tarnish you’ll need to use a silver paste cleaner or a silver polish spray. You should never clean or polish with circular motion as this can cause scratching, instead your rubbing motions should be lengthwise. You can remove that creviced tarnish on antique sterling silver use a very soft brush but some people actually leave the tarnish in the crevices of a piece to give it character. Remember to wear gloves when touching your antique sterling silver. There are salts, fats, and oils within your skin that can tarnish. In fact, fingerprints can become veritably etched into sterling silver. After you clean your antique sterling silver with a cleaner, use a clean cloth to take away any residue of the cleaner. It is now ready for storing or displaying. If you are placing your just cleaned antique sterling silver into storage, wrap them individually with buffered and acid-free tissue paper, well-washed cotton, linen or silver cloths. Do not use felt, newspaper, wool or chamois leather as a wrapper medium. These materials can cause extensive tarnishing to your antique sterling silver If you are going to display your precious antique sterling silver collection, consider a cabinet of wood with a glass-enclosed display space for putting these pieces on display. Unvarnished shelves in a wooden case omit damaging gaseous vapors so make sure that the wooden shelves are well varnished. Glass shelves are good but make very sure that they are strong enough to support the total weight of your antique sterling silver. To fight tarnishing place camphor blocks inside the cabinet, but you cannot let them actually touch the antique sterling silver pieces. There are also specially made papers and cloths that prevent or minimize tarnish buildup utilizing silver salts or activated carbon. Never use cotton, felt, wool or velvet as the clothes upon which your antique sterling silver pieces rest. The sulfides within these materials will eat away at the metal. While sunlight does not cause tarnishing, it can accelerate the chemical processes that bring on that film so don’t have your display case directly in the path of sunlight. Not only do you want to use soft cloths like flannel or all-cotton or very soft brushes like horsehair brushes when you do youre cleaning of your sterling silver, especially your displayed sterling silver, but wearing white gloves is also a good idea. Why wear these gloves? There are salts, fats, and oils within your skin that can tarnish the sterling silver pieces, that’s why. How to Use Your Newsletter to Research Your Market

By Azriel Winnett A few decades ago, in the early days of automatic banking terminals, the management at Citibank made a somewhat reluctant decision to introduce automatic tellers. They were anxious to cut costs, but they assumed that customers would rather deal with human tellers, had they the choice. Therefore, they compromised and reserved human tellers for people with more than $5,000 in their accounts. Depositors who weren’t in such a fortunate position were relegated to the machines. It soon became clear, though ,that the machines were wildly unpopular. Citibank stopped using them a year or two later. “Well,” thought the bankers, “we were right all along. People just won’t get used to dealing with machines.” It seemed as if one of the most promising inventions of the time would be laid to rest for good. Fortunately for everybody (except perhaps for Citibank), an executive from a rival bank tried to put himself into the collective shoes of bank clients. His gut feeling was that small depositors felt comfortable enough with the machines. They had just resented being treated as second-class customers. He introduced automatic tellers in his own bank - but without “class distinctions.” The rest is history. Even at Citibank, machine transactions are long taken for granted. “Never assume!” I was chided by my teachers during my school days. “It makes an ass out of you and an ass out of me!” But I often wonder when I think of this story - would the big brass at Citibank have made the same mistake had the clock moved forward a number of years and had they been publishing an email newsletter? Today, it seems inconceivable that a large and prestigious company like Citibank could be so out of touch with the thinking of its clientele. In the best business circles, the importance of solid, open lines of communication between producers of goods and services and their consumers has long been established. Learning relationships This is the age of the “Learning Relationship.” This, say personalization experts, the Pepper and Rodgers Group, is “a relationship between an enterprise and an individual customer that, through regular feedback from the customer, enables the enterprise to become smarter and smarter with respect to the customer’s individual needs.” In the brick-and-mortar world, it’s no particular big deal for the owner of your favorite corner hardware store to establish productive learning relationship with you, as one of his regular customers. Obviously, the more face-to-face contact he has with you, the easier this will be. On the Internet, however, we somehow tend to associate this concept with giant e-commerce enterprises sporting sophisticated store fronts and advanced technological capabilities - which enable them to anticipate our specialized needs with greater accuracy every time we log on to their sites. But what about the small business owners with very limited resources? Are they forced out of the picture? Let’s say you’re a small virtual company carrying a very limited range of durable products in a niche market. You know that existing customers are like gold, but what you don’t know is what kind of new products would appeal to them. Alternatively, you may be a professional, even a brick-and- mortar one - say, an accountant - and you’re swept off your feet during the tax season, but you hear far too little from your clients throughout the rest of the year! The ideal tool In all such cases, there’s no better tool than email for implementing the principle of the Learning Relationship, for putting yourself, so to speak, into the shoes of your target community, for gauging their needs,assessing what will work and what won’t - and finally, for promoting the fruits of your efforts to the very people who inspired them. How many companies, even those who publish newsletters on a regular basis, are really making use of this opportunity? We hear so much about the value of email publishing for driving people to websites, for public relations, for advertising your existing products. If you’re a business coach,for example, you may be making good use of your newsletter to let your clients know about your upcoming seminars and teleclasses. But if the level of interest in your seminars isn’t yet what you’d like it to be, do you really know why? If it’s just a matter of inconvenient times and locations, it may be easy enough to find out. But perhaps your community is craving for a change of topics or emphasis, or it prefers audiotapes, or private counseling? Whatever your business may be, do you know what your market really wants? So let’s get to the bottom line: in practice, how can your newsletter help to find answers to your questions? Granted, it’s not always easy. Human nature being what it is, a straight appeal to your readers to tell you what you want to know - even if you explain that it’s in their own interest - may meet with little response. They may feel that they’ve subscribed to receive information from YOU, not the other way round! Offering tangible incentives is one way of getting round this problem. But even if it doesn’t affect the accuracy of the information gathered, it may not be necessary. Moreover, you can achieve your objective without compromising your readers’ perception of your publication as a carrier of valuable content. Go to the drawing board and design the product or service you’d like to offer. Write up an article describing its features and benefits, analyzing its strengths and shortcomings, comparing it to other products that meet similar needs and explaining as objectively as possible how it differs from them. Perhaps you can even weave all this into a larger article dealing with a more general topic. Ask your readers what they think about the idea, whether they see it as making a differences to their lives. Provoke as much discussion as possible. Offer to publish the best responses. More than likely, they WILL respond. With creativity and practice, you’ll come up with many variations on this theme. Remember: in-depth insight into your customers’ (or subscribers’!) needs is the first and most basic prerequisite to maintaining their loyalty in the long term. Try training your abdominals using loaded reps of 12, 15, and even 20 reps. You see, the abdominal muscles are predominantly phasic(fast twitch) muscles. They respond better to loaded reps. Try using 2-3 sets of the above reps, and feel what happens to your abdominals. You should literally feel them tighten up. Provided though, that you follow steps 2 and 3. By Eric Vinje Things may be heating up for hot sauces, but they’ve been around since humans first realized they could eat chile peppers. Bottles containing hot sauce have been recovered from archaeological digs as well as shipwrecks, according to “The Hot Sauce Bible,” The Crossing Press, 1996. We have had a long love affair with hot sauces in the United States. Advertisements for cayenne sauces appeared in Massachusetts newspapers as early as 1807, according to some reports. In 1849, England’s Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce was first imported into the United States from Great Britain. Many of the first homegrown hot sauces in the United States came from the South. Cajun cuisine and other fiery ethnic foods fueled the drive to make hot sauces. One of the first mass manufactured domestic hot sauces was Edmund McIlhenny’s Tabasco Brand Pepper Sauce, which came on the market in 1868 and is still made today. According to McIlhenny “family lore,” Edmund first bottled his Tabasco sauce in recycled cologne bottles. The McIlhenny Company has trademarked “Tabasco,” which is why it’s the only Tabasco sauce on the market today. (Although it is trademarked by McIlhenny, Tabasco actual refers to a geographic and political region in Mexico - where the Tabasco pepper was said to originate.) Similar sauces can note they are made with Tabasco peppers, but can only be known as “hot sauce.” In addition, the McIlhenny Company is so proud of its heritage that it is opening a museum in 2006 in New Orleans. McIlhenny’s initial success also spawned a raft of imitators particularly in the roaring 1920s including Trappey’s Hot Sauce (made by B.F. Jacob Frank started selling Frank’s Redhot Cayenne Pepper Sauce in 1920 and it was this hot sauce that French’s, the current owner of Frank’s Redhot Cayenne Pepper Sauce, proclaims as the “secret ingredient” in the original Wing Sauce concocted in 1964 by Teresa Bellissimo at the Anchor Bar and Grill in Buffalo, NY. All three of these sauces are continued to be made and sold today. Some hot sauces didn’t tickle the palate of consumers. Heinz, the condiment company based in Pittsburgh, produced a Tabasco Pepper sauce, but it failed to compete with McIlhenny’s original and was eventually taken out of production.
